Alternatively, on the 1881 and 1891 censuses, his birthplace was noted as Glascoed.
I suspect that James gave the details for the 1871 census (his birthplace was specifically Lanvihangel, while his wife's was generally Carmarthenshire). On the 1881 and 1891 censuses, her birthplace was specific and his was Glascoed (possibly an error by his wife). I believe that she also made the same generalisation on the 1861 census with her then husband, John Pitt (who she said was from "Gloucestershire" while her birthplace was specifically Lansowel.

• Residence, 6 Oct 1868, Pontaberbargoed, Bargoed, Glamorgan. ⁴ This may have been a temporary address, for the purposes of marriage or a permanent address. By 1871, the family were back in Glascoed

• Education: Unable to sign his name, 6 Oct 1868, Gelligaer Parish Church, Gelligaer, Glamorgan. ⁴ Since signed marriage certificate with a mark.

James married Sarah Davies, daughter of Abel Davies and Unknown, on 6 Oct 1868 in Gelligaer Parish Church, Gelligaer, Glamorgan.⁷³ (Sarah Davies was born circa 1828 in Llansawel, Carmarthenshire. ^74,75 and died on 13 Jan 1901 in Rose Cottage, Glascoed, Monmouthshire ^76,77.)

  Marriage Notes:

Sarah had family in Gelligaer parish, which was part of the Merthyr Tydfil registration district. It is quite possible that she was living in this area at the time, since her first husband, John Pitt, had died 3 years earlier, leaving Sarah with a young family to bring up alone.
